Irememberoncemyhighschoolteacherinvitedthewholeclasstoshareourdreamswitheachother.Isaid,“Iwanttobeeanarchitectinfuture.”Mydeskmatesaid,“Iwanttobeapublicspeaker.”Interestingly,ayearlater,heflewabroadtogoforarchitecture,andIwenttocollegemajoringinEnglish.AndLookwhoisgivingaspeechrightnow.

WhatIlearnedfromthisexperiencewasthat,theroadweenduptakingcanbedifferentfromourfirstplans.Ifweallrealizeourinitialdreams,thisworldwillbefullofsupermenandprincesses.AsIgrewup,Ioftenhearpeoplesay,lifeisallaboutmakingpromise.Yourdreammaydie.Youhavetoetermswithyourlife.

Well,mymotherdoesn’tseeitthatway.Sheisakindergartenteacher,butshehasagiftinpainting.Ioftensaidtoher,“ifyouhadappliedforanartschool,youwoulddefinitelyhavemadeagreatpainter.”Shesaid,“Yes,Iwould.Butyouwereborn!”“Butit’sok,”shecontinued,“Ilovekids.Icanseetheircutenessandinnocenceeveryday.Besides,theylovemeaswell.Plus,IhaveasonwhoisabouttoseeRuiChenggangfacetoface.Mycolleaguesaregoingtobesojealousofme.IamhappywithwhoIamandIlovemyjob.”

Sometimeswhenwearestuckinarut,wemaystopandwonderiflifecouldbebetterhadwetakentheotherroad,andwemayregrethavinglostsomuchforourstupiddecisions.Butonthethresholdofadulthood,Iwouldratherviewmylifeinapositivelight.Ibelievethereisnoabsolutelosing.Eventhoughweseemtohavemadeapromisewitheachchoice,eventhoughweseemtohavewastedalotofeffortwitheachfailure,wearegainingsomethingeverystepoftheway.

HadInotgivenupmydreamtobeanarchitect,Iwouldn’thavefoundmyloveforEnglish,andIwouldn’thavemetmyfriends,who,inordertoboostmyconfidencebeforethespeechcontest,gatheredinmydormitoryandheldapeprally.Iwouldn’thavemetmyprofessorswhohavealwaysbeenpatientwithme,evenwhenIcouldn’teupwithasatisfyingspeechfor2weeks.

AndhadInotspentthelast2weekspainfullypreparingforthespeechcontest,Iwouldn’thavehadachancetothinkaboutthisworld,toponderonlifeandtoformabetterunderstandingofmyself.

Forallmyblessings,Iowemylifeanattitudeofgratitude.FromtimetotimeIwouldpicturemyselfworkinginmyownstudio,designingabeautifulvilla.ButIwillnotregretit,becauseI’mhappywithwhoIam,andIlovewhatIhave.

Soladiesandgentlemen,don’tbesoobsessedwiththeotherroadinyourlife.Thepathyouchosemaynotbeideal,butthat’snottheendoftheworld.Fillyourheartwithgratitude.Breakupwithyourregrets,andfallinlovewithyourdream.Throughallthehardshipsanddifficulties,you’llfindthatyou’vegarneredmorethanyou’vesacrificed.
