Hello,ladiesandgentlemen.TodaymytopicisTheRoadNotTakeninLife.

“Whyareyoudoingthis?Don’tyouknowit’satotalwasteoftime?”That’swhatmymomyelledattheten-year-oldme,whenshefoundoutthatIhadsignedupforanEnglishstory-tellingpetition.

Ibowedmyhead;yes,shewasright.BythenIwasenteringGradeSix,facedwiththebiggestchallengeyettoe—theexaminationtoentermydreamjuniorhighschool.Forthat,Ihadgivenupmybelovedpianolesson,myfavoritecartoonprogramandeventheplayfulweekendfamilyreunionwithmycousins.Iwouldn’tbesurprisedatallifmyvery-strict-university-teachermothergotfuriousatmewhenIchosetodoanythingbesidesstudyatthatcrucialmoment.

Butthat’snotalltoit.Nowpleasetakeagoodlookatthetwenty-year-oldme,andimaginewhatIwaslikewhenIwasten.Herearethekeywords:nervous,timid,shy,tongue-tiedwhenfacingstrangers,andessentiallyabookworm.Thesesignslookedfataltomymother,andpossiblytoyou,too;shethoughtthatIcouldbeanythingbutagoodpublicspeaker.

Well,ImyselfactuallysaidnotomyEnglishteacheratfirst,becauseIhadneverdoneanythinglikethatbeforeandIwasafraid.ButhetoldmesinceIlikedreadingsomuch,whynottrytotellastoryIlovetoeveryone?Healsopromisedmethatthejudgeswerenotfrighteningatall;justthinkofthemascarrotsandcabbagesinavegetablepatch.

Theten-year-oldmewaspersuadedbymyteacher’swords.Thefeelingoftellingmybelovedstoriestosomeoneelseignitedasparkofanticipationinmylittlechest.SoIchosetoenduremymother’srantingforanentirehour,thenraisedmyheadbravelyandpleaded:“Mom,please.Ijustwanttotry.”

Mymotherlookedasifshewasonthevergeofanotheroutburst—butsheonlysighed.Itookthatasherpermission,andstartedworkingwithmyteacherdayandnighttofindastory,toillustratethedetails,andtopracticemyfacialexpressionsandgesturesinfrontofthemirror.Onthedayofthepetition,Iwentonthestagefortheveryfirsttimeinmylife;Icouldfeelthenervousnessthreateningtobringmedown,andIfeltcheatedbymyteacher:itwasimpossibletopicturethejudgesasmerecarrotsandcabbages.ButIwenton.AlthoughIonlygotthethirdprizeatthattime,onthatstageIstayedeversince,eventothisverymoment.

IshouldthankmyteacherandmymotherforlettingmetakearoadthatIhavenevertakenbefore.LittledidIknowthenthatthisroadwouldonedayleadtheshylittleten-year-oldmeintoawonderland;itledmetomeetallofyouheretoday.Icantellyoufromthebottomofmyheartthatitisn’tsoterrifyingtoventureintotheunknownatall;allyouneedisalittlecourageanddetermination.Seewheremyroadhasledme,andbravelytakeyourfirststep.
