"ThecoldsnapislikeabroomsweepingdownallthewaytoShanghai,anditbringsthedusthere,"saidLin,addingthatatmosphericmotionsometimescausestroublesuchasthat.
BeforearrivinginShanghai,thepollutantshadleftsomeofShanghai'sneighboringprovincesshroudedinsmogandfog.
Fiftyoutofthe72monitoringstationsinJiangsuprovincereportedmediumtoheavypollutiononMondayevening,aordingtoZhangXiangzhi,deputydirectoroftheJiangsuEnvironmentalMonitoringCenter.
YangXin,aprofessorwithFudanUniversity'sdepartmentofenvironmentalscienceandengineeringwhospecializesinatmosphericparticulates,saidseasonalinfluencesexplaintherecord-breakingdatainbothBeijingandShanghai.
"TakeShanghaiasanexample.Itjustcelebrateditscleanestsummerin20xx-seabreezefromthesoutheastishelpfulindilutingpollutantsintheair.However,themonsoonsingfromthenorthwestinthewinterusuallybringdirtyairfromthenorth,"Yangsaid.
AgriculturalstrawburninginnearbyareasalsocontributedtopartofShanghai'sPM2.5reading,aordingtoWangLin,aresearcheratFudanUniversity'sDepartmentofEnvironmentalScienceandEngineering.
