ThereisalegendthatStBoniface,anEnglishmonk,cameuponagroupofpagansgatheredaroundanoaktreewhowerepreparingtosacrificeachildtotheGodThor.Inordertostopthesacrifice,andsavethechild'slife,StBonifaceissaidtohavefelledthetreewithoneblowofhisfist.Lateron,afirtreegrewinplaceoftheoakandthis,StBonifacetoldthepagans,wastheTreeofLifeandrepresentedtheChristChild.

PrinceAlbert,husbandofQueenVictoria,iscreditedwithbeingresponsibleforintroducingthecustomoftheChristmastreetotheBritishpublicbydecoratingthefirstEnglishChristmastreeatWindsorCastlein1841usingcandles,sweets,fruitandgingerbread.
ThepopularityoftheChristmastreegrewinBritainduringthefirsthalfofthe20thcentury,withtreesbeingbiggerandmoreelaboratelydecoratedwithbells,baublesandtinsel.However,theonsetoftheSecondWorldWarresultedinabanoncuttingdowntreesfordecorationandpeopleresortedtohavingsmall,artificialtabletoptreesbearinghomemadedecorations.ThesewereoftentakendownintotheairraidshelterswhenthesirenssoundedtoprovideabitofChristmascheer!
Thisallchangedfollowingthewar,andlargetreeswereerectedinmanypublicplacestocelebrateChristmas.ThemostfamousoftheseisthetreeinTrafalgarSquare,LondonwhichisanannualgiftfromtheNorwegiangovernmenttogivethanksforthehelptheyreceivedfromBritainduringthewar.
