onseptember6,1620,themayflowershipsetsailfromplymouth,devon,england,takingalltheenglishpilgrims（清教徒）tothenewworld.theenglishpilgrimsnumberedaboutahundredpeople,andleftenglandtoescapereligiouspersecution.theirvoyagetothenewworldwasfinancedbymerchantadventurers,anenglishinvestroup.

thepilgrimssailedsixty-sixdays,arrivedinthenewworldinnovemberofthesameyear.theyfirstsettledinacornfieldabandonedbynativeindiansandnameditplymouthplantation.

in1941,acongressionaljointresolutionsetthefourththursdayofnovemberasanationalholidayforthanksgiving.
