onseptember6,1620,themayflowershipsetsailfromplymouth,devon,england,takingalltheenglishpilgrims(清教徒)tothenewworld.theenglishpilgrimsnumberedaboutahundredpeople,andleftenglandtoescapereligiouspersecution.theirvoyagetothenewworldwasfinancedbymerchantadventurers,anenglishinvestroup.
thepilgrimssailedsixty-sixdays,arrivedinthenewworldinnovemberofthesameyear.theyfirstsettledinacornfieldabandonedbynativeindiansandnameditplymouthplantation.

in1941,acongressionaljointresolutionsetthefourththursdayofnovemberasanationalholidayforthanksgiving.
