Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.
Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris.
Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X ray facilities(设备) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers.Irene continued the work by developing X ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognised in the form of a Military’Medal by the French government.
In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.
Like her mother, Irene bined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity(辐射能). Irene Joliot?Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.

The best Mother’s Day gift I ever received was a magnolia(木兰)tree. At first, it was a little thing, but it was mine, and I knew I would treasure it.
Magnolia trees, you see, were my mother’s favorite. We had one in the front yard of our house when I was growing up. I can still remember Mom’s pleasure in seeing it.“Oh, look!”she’d shout every year.“The magnolia tree is going to bloom(开花).”On April 6, her birthday, the pink and white flowers would be all over the branches, announcing the arrival of spring.
Back then, I didn’t find the blooming of a tree to be an event worthy of celebration. But my mother had a way of appreciating the smallest things. A baby’s smile, or a call from an old friend filled her with happiness.
On the first Mother’s Day following her death six years ago, I wasn’t sure how I’d live. I felt my mother was everywhere.
That Sunday morning I awoke, wondering where my husband David had gone with our two daughters, Kira, 4, and Sophie, 9 months. As I was lying in bed, enjoying the peace, Kira suddenly burst through the bedroom door.
“Look outside, Mommy!”she said. I raised the window. Next to David was a little tree. “It’s a magnolia tree,”Kira said.“Happy Mother’s Day,”David said.
Although I don’t have my mother any longer, I have her tree. When the magnolia blooms, we admire its beauty and use it as a chance to talk about my mother and her love for flowers. These moments help keep her spirit very much alive. I’m always reminded to appreciate the small things that make life so beautiful.

There’s more to an apple than its great taste. An apple provides many health benefits.
Research shows apples contain antioxidants(抗氧化剂)that lower the risk of heart disease and cancer.
Researchers from Cornell University in New York found that eating just 100 grams of apples gives you antioxidants equal to taking 1,500 mg of vitamin C. Studies also show antioxidants in apples help reduce the risk of some diseases. In addition, apples, contain pectin(果胶), which helps to lower cholesterol(胆固醇).
Fresh apples have traditionally been given to treat constipation(a kind of disease)because they help digestion while cooked apples bring relief to people with diseases in their stomachs. In addition, apples can help people with aging issues by promoting hair growth. And, because apples act like a natural toothbrush, eating them fresh will help clean your teeth.
Many people like to eat apples because they can help with weight loss. Apples are low in calories and fat but high in fiber, which gives you that satiated feeling.
They even help reduce stress. University studies have shown that students who eat apples often have fewer headaches, colds and stress?related illnesses. Other studies have shown that apples, and especially their skins, contain a lot of cancer-fighting nutrients―so be sure to eat the whole thing.
Where did this nutritious fruit e from? Some researchers think early apples came from Kazakhstan where wild apple trees still grow in large forests. Other possibilities are the mountains in southwest Asia and also northern Europe. Evidence shows that people have been enjoying apples since at least 6,500 BC. Today 7,500 different kinds of apples grow throughout the world.
The next time you bite into an apple, remember apples are more than just mouthwatering. They also keep you healthy. So eat an apple―or more―a day and keep the doctor away!
