inthebiblicalworld,theveryfirstmurderwasarousedbyenvyandingreekmythologywecouldfortunatelyhavethisprivilegetoappreciatethecolorfulbutsinfulparadiseofjealousy.itseemsthatenvyisinevitableandunavoidableandeveryoneofusshouldhavetastedtheflavorofjealousyduringthelongandpainfulwaytowardsadulthood.aordingtoscientificstudy,thetenderbuddingshootsofjealousysproutedintheheartofachildwhenwehavetopetewithourbrothersorsistersbutfailtobeoutstandinginthatpeculiarperiodoftheformationofone’sbodyandsoul.andwhat’smore,however,wegraduallylearninthatperiodhowtocorrectlydealwiththebuddingjealousyandthemeanstorestrainitwheneverthislittledevilshouldwanttoassertitself.andnowadays,astheonechildpolicyhasbecamethehorsesense,mostofus,especiallythosewhowereborninthe1980shavenoimmediatebrothersorsistersandwearemuchmorelikelyself-centeredinourwayofbehaviorandlackofcooperativeinclinationingeneral.thatistosay,asapost-1980generationmember,weareinclinedtobejealous.

sohowtoefficientlyremedythisinimicalnaturalflawendowedbytheomnipotencesincewehumansalwaystrysohardtoperfectourselves?inmyopinion,theonlywaytoachievethisseeminglyimpossiblegoalistolearntoadmire,trytoappreciateothers’virtuesandadvantageswedonotownbutforalongtimehavecoveted,especiallythatofourpeers.thedistinctionsbetweenenvyandadmirationareobviousenoughbutthereisonerespectstillworthyofmention,thatjealousywouldnotbearousedbetweentwopersonswhoarebynomeansrelatedinanysense.forinstance,wemaybeenviouswhenoneofthepeershasgotanawardbutwedefinitelywon’tbejealousifmichaeljordanhasbeenconferredonthemvp.andthedegreeofenvyoftenincreasesifthepeerwhohasoutdoneushadusedsometreacherytricksorshamefullytakensomeunfairadvantages.andthistypeofenvyofteninevitablyresultsinoverflowingbuthiddenhatred.thedecidedsafetyofthemiddlestationoflife,asadvocatedbyconfucianism,isoneoftheevidencesthatreflectman’sfeartowardthegrudgecausedbyjealousy.

butenvyisnotastotallydevilishasitseemstobe.slightjealousycanstimulateourdesiretoachievewhatwewantorwhatweenvy.aordingtofreudiantheories,itistheemotionofjealousywhichfinallystirsthepoorpeopleinmiserytopursuefairnessandjustice.butcorrespondinglyitisamorbidanddestructiveemotionthatsometimesbothersandfrustratesus.
