From the kitchen window, Mama and Papa watched their daughter run down the sunny road toward Lizzy’s house.

“English may be the global language of business but it is not enough by itself for panies to gain a lasting presence in many markets,” the European mission (委员会) says in a study published last month.
The study collected by the British National Centre for Languages for the EU leader, says over 10 per cent of 2,000 small and medium-sized (中等规模的) firms in 29 European countries sampled (抽样) in the study have lost export contract (出口合同) because of lack of language skills. The study says French is used to trade with partners in Africa, Spanish in Latin America, and Russian in Eastern Europe.
“The picture is far more plex than the much-quoted view that English is the world language,” the study says.
Multilingual (多种语言的) missioner Leonard Orban admitted that English plays an important role worldwide, but he wants to improve more linguistic variety within the EU.
The EU’s linguistic headaches have exploded with the group’s expansion.Languages have bee a sensitive topic in Brussels where English is increasingly eclipsing (侵蚀) French as the main working language of the anization.Translation of EU papers into EU’s 23 official languages costs 1 billion euros (US $1.31 billion) a year.
“We want to be open not only to official languages of the Union, but also to others like regional (区域的) languages, languages of minorities, immigrants’ (移民) languages and third countries’ languages,” Orband said.
Many EU students have improved their language skills during non-formal learning activities.Young people from more than 20 different nationalities travel across Europe to participate together in many cultural programmes, language courses, thematic workshops (主题研习会) and other activities that are anized in about 100 cities.

Scientists have long understood the key role that oceans play in regulating the Earth’s climate.Oceans cover 70 percent of the globe and store a thousand times more heat than the atmosphere does. What’s newer is the understanding of how this key ponent of our climate system responds to global warming.
A brake on global warming―for now
One of the ocean’s most important climate functions is absorbing heat and carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the gases that cause global warming.Acting as a heat sponge (海绵), the oceans have absorbed huge amounts of heat and CO2 in the last forty years.
Fujita explains that “the oceans are saving us from faster climate change―they are a big flywheel that delays rapid overheating of the earth, putting a brake on the climate system.”
“That’s the good news,” he adds.“The bad news is that the oceans only slow the atmospheric warming.Once the oceans e to balance with a greenhouse-gas warmed earth, the extreme heat will remain in the atmosphere and things will get much hotter.” But where and how the oceans release this aumulated (积累) heat is uncertain. And as the ocean stores heat, fragile underwater ecosystems are struggling.
The most recent scientific report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IP) also notes with concern that the ocean is acidifying because of increased absorption of atmospheric CO2, and thus causing a threat for shell-forming species.Sharp increases in carbon dioxide levels will cause further acidification of the ocean.
Currents distributing heat
Another important role the oceans play is that of distributor.Oceans deliver heat and life-sustaining nutrients around the globe.Just as blood vessels bring oxygen and nutrients to cells in the human body, the ocean’s currents carry oxygen, nutrients and heat throughout the Earth. The ocean distributes 25 to 50 percent of the energy the pla receives from the sun.For example, the Gulf Stream carries heat across the Atlantic. This warm current gives northwestern Europe a milder climate than it would normally have so far north.A change to the ocean’s circulation (循环) patterns could throw Europe into a colder period, even as the rest of world experiences warmer temperatures.
64 We can infer from the passage that _____.
A.the oceans cause global warming B.the oceans stop global warming
C.the oceans release nutrients and heat D.the ocean ecosystems face more dangers
65.From the passage we can learn that the ocean’s currents _____.
A.produce oxygen and nutrients everywhere B.absorb 25~50% of the energy from the sun
C.distribute heat and nutrients aroundD.change the ocean’s circulation patterns
66.Which of the following is NOT the result of the ocean absorbing heat and carbon dioxide?
A.It causes further acidification.B.It affects shell-forming species.
C.It makes the atmosphere hotter.D.It regulates the Earth’s climate.
67.This passage mainly talks about ______.
A.the roles of oceans B.global warming
C.ocean currents D.carbon dioxide

Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old.Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.
Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes.A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver. This is how babies learn to connect and municate with other human beings.
One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.
The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way.If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.
Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children.
Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression.
The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.
These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children.Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.
68.Aording to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies?
A.The environment.B.Mother’s sensitivity.
C.Their peers(同龄人) D.Education before birth.
69.What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?
A.To prove that babies can learn before they are born.
B.To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born.
C.To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies.
D.To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills.
70.Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?
A.The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children.
B.The children of women who did not suffer from depression.

Without most people realizing it, there has been a revolution in office work over the last ten years. Before that time, large puters were only used by large, rich panies that could afford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small puters have e onto the market, which are capable of doing the work that used to be done by much larger and expensive puters, so now most smaller panies can use them
The main development in small puters has been in the field of word processors (处理器) , or WPS as they are often called.40% of British offices are now estimated to have a word processor and this percentage is growing fast.
There are many advantages in using a word processor for both secretary and manager. The secretary is freed from a lot of daily work, such as re-typing letters and storing papers. He or she can use this time to do other more interesting work for the boss. From a manager’s point of view, secretarial time is being made better use of and money can be saved by doing daily jobs automatically outside office hours.
But is it all good? If a lot of daily secretarial work can be done automatically, surely this will mean that fewer secretaries will be needed.Another worry is the increasing medical problems related to work with visual display units (显示器).The case of a slow loss of sight among people using word processors seems to have risen greatly. It is also feared that if a woman works at a VDU for long hours, the unborn child in her body might be killed.Safety screens to put over a VDU have been invented but few panies in England bother to buy them.
Whatever the arguments for and against word processor, they are a key feature (特征) of this revolution in office practice.

As a middle school student , we should take an active part in creating a society that saves.
On the one hand , the natural resources are limited .We don’t have enough water , oil or forest in many places .On the other hand , people keep cutting down more trees and letting out more carbon dioxide .At the same time , everyone can see that the environment is getting worse , People suffer from more typhoons and tornados nowadays .What’s worse , air and water pollution is being more and more serious.
In my opinion , we students should do something to stop wasting .We can save food , water , paper ,electricity , etc .in our daily life .Meanwhile , we should take buses instead of cars ,refuse to use chopsticks which are only used once and don’t use plastic bags.
