I began working in journalism when I was eight. It was my mother’s idea. She wanted me to “make something” of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the petition.
With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was supper time, I walked back home.
“How many did you sell, my boy?” my mother asked.
“None.”
“Where did you go?”
“The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”
“What did you do?”
“Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”
“You just stood there?”
“Didn’t sell a single one.”
“My God, Russell!”
Uncle Allen put in, “Well, I’ve decided to take the Post.” I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分镍币). It was the first nickle I earned.
Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I would have to ring doorbells, address adults with self-confidence, and persuade them by saying that no one, no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home.
One day, I told my mother I’d changed my mind. I didn’t want to make a suess in the magazine business.
“If you think you can change your mind like this,” she replied, “you’ll bee a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said no, she would scold me.
My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father’s plain workman’s life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a suessful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love.

The Inter will open up new vistas (前景), create the global village――you can make new friends all around the world. That, at least, is what it promised us. The difficulty is that it did not take the human mind into aount. The reality is that we cannot keep relationships with more than a limited number of people. No matter how hard the Inter tries to put you in munication, its best efforts will be defeated by your mind.
The problem is twofold(双重的). First, there is a limit on the number of people we can hold in mind and have a meaningful relationship with. That number is about 150 and is set by the size of our brain. Second, the quality of your relationships depends on the amount of time you invest in then. We invest a lot in a small number of people and then distribute what’s left among as many others as we can. The problem is that if we invest(投资) little time in a person, our engagement with that person will decline(衰退) until eventually(最后) it dies into “someone I once knew”.
This is not, of course, to say that the Inter doesn’t serve a socially valuable function. Of course it does. But the question is not that it allows you to increase the size of your social circle to include the rest of the world, but that you can keep your relationships with your existing friends going even though you have to move to the other side of the world.
In one sense, that’s a good thing. But it also has a disadvantage. If you continue to invest in your old friends even though you can no longer see them, then certainly you aren’t using your time to make new friends where you now live. And I suspect that probably isn’t the best use of your time. Meaningful relationships are about being able to municate with each other, face to face. The Inter will slow down the rate with which relationships end, but it won’t stop that happening eventually.
66.The number of friends we can keep relationships with is decided by__________.
A. the Inter B. the time we have
C. the place we live D. the mind
67.The underlined word “engagement” in the second paragraph probably means “_______”.
A. appointmentB. connectionC. interviewD. agreement
68.The author holds the view that________.
A. the Inter helps to keep in touch with friends far away
B. the Inter determines the quality of social relationships
C. the Inter greatly increases the size of social circles
D. the Inter is of no value in social munication
69.What will the author encourage us to do?
A. To keep in touch with old friends when we have moved away.
B. To chat with friends often on the Inter.
C. To make more new friends face to face.
D. To stop using the Inter to make new friends.
70.What is the author’s attitude towards the use of the Inter to strengthen relationships?
A. He thinks it useless.B. He is hopeful of it.
C. He agrees with it. D. He doubts it.

The Xinhua News Agency said it calls for stronger controls over producers, greater responsibilities for government and more serious punishment for illegal activities.
But Chinese officials have aused some foreign media of overstating problems with goods made in China. They say food imports from the United States also fail inspection sometimes. 作文范文:
A Ten-minute Break
As a Senior Three student, time seems much limited. As a result, more and more students try to study from early morning till late afternoon, even during the ten-minute break. In my opinion, to take a ten-minute break between classes is definitely necessary. Otherwise we will feel tired both physically and mentally.
During the break, we do something to get rid of tiredness. What we need is to have a real rest, instead of getting more tired. So doing nothing tiring in that period is really good for us.
My ten-minute break is always pleasing. Sometimes I do some simple exercises. Sometimes I have a free chat with my classmates or just take a walk outside. When the next class begins, I feel fresh again.
