Andlo,onMay3thatyearIawoketoagreensostartlingastobealmostelectric,asifspringweresimplyamatterofflippingaswitch.Hills,skyandforestrevealedtheirpurples,bluesandgreen.Leaveshadunfurled,goldfincheshadarrivedatthefeederanddaffodilswerefightingtheirwayheavenward.
Thentherewastheoldappletree.Itsitsonanundevelopedlotinmyneighborhood.Itbelongstonooneandthereforetoeveryone.Thetree'sdarktwistedbranchessprawlinunprunedabandon.Eachspringitblossomssoprofuselythattheairbeessaturatedwiththearomaofapple.WhenIdrivebywithmywindowsrolleddown,itgivesmethefeelingofmovinginanotherelement,likeakidonawaterslide.
Untillastyear,IthoughtIwastheonlyoneawareofthistree.Andthenoneday,inafitofspringmadness,Isetoutwithprunerandloppertoremoveafewerrantbranches.NosoonerhadIarrivedunderitsboughsthanneighborsopenedtheirwindowsandsteppedontotheirporches.ThesewerepeopleIbarelyknewandseldomspoketo,butitwasasifIhadeunbiddenintotheirpersonalgardens.
