OnChristmasEve,Marmeehasjustarrivedhomefrompassingoutfoodtothelessfortunatewithaletterfromherhusband,thegirls'father.Theallgathertogetheraroundthefiretoreadtheletter.Afterwards,thegirlsaretearyeyed.Marmeekissesthemandtheyareofftobed.

Asduskfalls,thegirlsareallupintheatticactingoutJo'splay,whichshereadsfromthelocal(fake)newspaper.Astheyareperforming,theirrich,next-doorneighborsgrandsonwatchesfromthewindow.

The2oldestgirls:JoandMeg,getreadytoattendtheChristmasBall.WhileJoiscurlingMeg'shair,thereisastrangesmelltotheair.Amyscreams,Megshairisbeingsinged.Theycontinuediggingthroughtheoldclothesbinforapairofwhitegloves.
